A practice in awareness

Learning the Language of Your Body

Our bodies are constantly giving us information.

Throughout the day, you may notice moments when your body contracts: tension, tightness, shallow breathing, discomfort, or a sense of being on alert. You may also notice moments when your body expands: your breathing deepens, your muscles soften, you feel more present, creative, comfortable, or at ease.

Both are worth paying attention to.

The purpose of this practice is to become more aware of these shifts and get curious about what was happening immediately before them: what you were experiencing, thinking, feeling, and perhaps believing.

We aren't trying to make every sensation mean something or immediately change it. We're learning to notice the patterns.

Because once you can see a pattern, you are no longer unconscious of it.

That is the beginning of choice. And choice creates freedom.

Become the doer and the doer watcher.

Notice what happens in your body as you move through your day. When something tightens, opens, softens, or shifts, pause long enough to get curious.

You do not need to solve it in the moment. You simply want to become more conscious of the relationship between what is happening around you, what you are thinking, what you are feeling, and what your body is experiencing.

What would I have to believe right now in order to feel this way?

Do not force an answer. Let the question open a door.

When you notice

Contraction

Tightness, pain, shallow breathing, pressure, fear, overwhelm, bracing, irritation, or the feeling that your body is closing down.

1. What changed in my body?Where do I feel it? What does it feel like?
2. What happened immediately before this? What was happening around me?
3. What was I thinking?Capture the internal conversation as closely as you can.
4. What am I feeling emotionally?Fear? Pressure? Anxiety? Guilt? Frustration? Uncertainty?
5. What would I have to believe right now in order to feel this way?Stay curious. Do not judge the answer.
When you notice

Expansion

Ease, openness, deeper breathing, presence, creativity, excitement, relief, authenticity, comfort, or the feeling that your system is settling.

1. What changed in my body? What softened, opened, relaxed, or became easier?
2. What happened immediately before this? What was happening around me?
3. What was I thinking or paying attention to?What changed in the conversation inside?
4. What am I feeling emotionally?Peace? Relief? Joy? Confidence? Freedom? Excitement?
5. What would I have to believe right now in order to feel this way?Notice what is present when your system opens.

Notice. Breathe. Become curious.

If you notice yourself contracting, you do not need to immediately make the sensation disappear.

Pause. Let your shoulders soften and give your body a little space.

The breath

1. Breathe in slowly through your nose for about 5 seconds.Let the breath travel down through your chest and into your belly without forcing it.
2. Hold gently for 5 seconds. No straining. Just a comfortable pause.
3. Exhale slowly for about 5 seconds.Let the body soften as you breathe out.
4. Hold gently for 5 seconds. Then repeat for 5 rounds, or until you notice your system beginning to settle.

If a deep breath feels difficult, do not force it. Work with the breath your body will comfortably allow and let the range expand naturally over time.

The purpose of the breath is not to fight the feeling. It is to create enough room for you to observe what is happening instead of automatically becoming consumed by it.

A simple cue

Notice → Breathe → Become curious.

Speaking your truth

One of the things you noticed in our conversation was a change in your body after you spoke honestly with your manager.

That does not mean every uncomfortable feeling has the same cause. It simply gives you something worth watching.

When you notice yourself wanting to hide, appease, avoid, over-explain, or hold something back, become curious about what your body does before and after you communicate authentically.

What changes in my body when I stop resisting what is true for me?

If you are going to be here, be here.

You were very clear that you do not want to stay in your current role forever. You were also clear that, for now, you are still there.

There is a big difference between choosing where you are for now and spending every day internally fighting the fact that you are there.

Choosing the present does not mean choosing it forever.

It means giving yourself permission to become a new version of you in the same environment.

What if you stopped letting your past experience of the job dictate your present-moment experience of it?

What if you approached it like you were brand new again — without all the history, disappointment, assumptions, or evidence about what the job has been?

There was a version of you who once walked into this role without knowing what was possible, without knowing all the reasons it might be hard, and succeeded anyway.

What would it look like to bring that beginner energy back — and become a boss bitch in this role again, irrespective of the environment?

Not because you have decided to stay forever. Because while you are here, you get to decide who you are being.

You can practise:

  • I am here today.
  • I choose to be present today.
  • I can bring curiosity and fresh energy into familiar work.
  • I do not need my environment to change before I change how I show up.
  • I can create excitement again instead of rehearsing the past.
  • I can continue building what comes next while fully occupying where I am now.
Fear, tension, and discomfort are information.

They do not automatically mean something is wrong.

Instead of immediately deciding what the feeling means, ask:

What would I have to believe right now in order to feel this way?

One more thing to remember

A belief can become so rehearsed that the emotional response it produces begins to feel like confirmation.

I feel afraid, therefore there must be something to fear.

But a feeling can also be an invitation to investigate rather than a verdict about reality.

The discovery of an unwanted belief is not a failure. It can become cause for celebration rather than self-judgment.

Because once you can see a pattern, you are no longer unconscious of it.

That is the beginning of choice. And choice creates freedom.

Your body and your medical care can both matter.

Continue following the medical guidance you are receiving while we explore this additional layer of your experience.

This practice is not about assuming every physical sensation has a psychological cause. It is about becoming curious about the relationship you are noticing between circumstances, thoughts, emotions, nervous-system state, behaviour, and physical experience.

Do not make the medical appointment your identity.

You can receive appropriate care and still spend the rest of your day practising the version of you who feels present, capable, creative, and well.
